It is also more flexible as compared to the in dash systems because you can just unplug it and it can go with you in another car or you can use it to guide your way when you ride your bike, hiking etc.

Most of this units are also feature rich and are touch screen eliminating the need for buttons or jog dials. They are also preloaded with maps of lower 48. Other maps of different countries are also available and can be easily uploaded to the system.

There are units that are battery operated so that you don't have to deal with the wires. Other options include voice command, live weather and traffic reports.

These little units are built to last and my personal unit has been dropped several times but they still keep on ticking. Prices have gone down a lot for this gadgets and you can easily purchase an entry level GPS unit for $75.00 and above.

One of the drawbacks of these units are that they can easily be stolen from your car not unless you hide it together with the base or windshield attachment. Hiding the unit and not the accessories will not prevent somebody to assume that because you have a GPS attachment then most likely you have the main unit somewhere hidden inside the car.
